When is the Right Time to Propose Marriage?

Proposing is a big deal. It’s a massive commitment to a special person, telling them you’re ready to do life with them until you or they leave this earth. Naturally, it can be tricky to determine the correct time to get down on one knee.

How Do You Know You’re Ready For a Proposal?

No time will feel foolproof when determining if it’s time to propose. However, a few indicators can make it simpler to decide.

Here are a few signs you’re ready for a proposal:

  • Excellent communication: If you and your partner are excellent at communicating, you’re in a solid position to deal with any issues in your union.
  • Marriage discussions: If you’ve talked about marriage before, both of you have it in mind and are leaning toward it. It’s a safe bet.
  • Unit mindset: A solid indication of marriage is if you move as a unit. You make choices together, resolve issues together, and know each other well.
  • Similar values: You and your partner have discussed your values and they are similar. These are valuable as you spend more time together and potentially have children.
  • Rough patches: A solid sign you’re ready for marriage is if you’ve survived rough patches together.

How Long Should Couples Date Before Getting Married?

There is no formula for the right length of dating before marriage. However, most research shows that 2-5 years of dating is the sweet spot for the average couple.

Some couples have successful marriages after a month of dating, while others need half a decade to figure things out. Only time will reveal the successful route for you guys.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long to Propose?

If your partner wants marriage and you’re both ready, waiting too long to propose can build resentment between you. There could be a rise in boredom, the risk of losing the ability to have kids, and frustration as you grow apart.
