Unfortunately, jealousy is an all too common feeling in any relationship, whether it’s for your partner or someone else. It’s vital to understand that feeling and overcome it for the sake of any long-term relationship you want to survive.

What Does Jealousy Do To a Relationship?

Jealousy is a poison that seems harmless but will develop into something far more dangerous in your relationship. If you let it simmer for too long, it will lead to resentment and defensiveness, ripping trust apart and leading to arguments. In time, it tears apart many relationships.

How to Understand and Overcome Relationship Jealousy

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

The first step in dealing with jealousy in a relationship is to acknowledge how you feel. Telling yourself that it’s jealousy is the root of getting to the bottom of the issues, and it will help you validate your emotions and then squash them before they get out of control.

2. Determine the Source

Next, you must determine the source of the relationship jealousy. Is there an ex your partner seems to be talking to more than usual? Are they spending more time than they used to with friends? Maybe it seems like your loved one is taking their time looking at other people besides you – or so you think.

It can be tricky to humble yourself to the point where you can acknowledge the source of your jealousy. Sometimes, it might be justified. Most of the time, it’s a small insecurity that gets out of control in your mind.

3. Communicate

Finally, ensure you communicate your feelings with your partner. Avoid speaking it in an accusatory tone – state your emotions to be clear with your loved one. They might be able to help with your feelings, leading to reassurance and a better understanding of each other.
