Two Ways to Safely Meditate While Driving

In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments of tranquility and inner peace can be challenging. Meditation is a powerful practice that offers numerous benefits, such as reducing stress, enhancing focus, and promoting overall well-being. While meditation is commonly associated with sitting in stillness, it is possible to incorporate it into our daily activities, even while driving. Here are two ways to mediate on the go.

Breathing Techniques While Driving

The mindful breathing technique is a simple yet effective way to cultivate mindfulness while driving. It involves bringing your attention to the breath, which serves as an anchor for the present moment. Once you are comfortable and safe in your car, start by taking a few deep breaths to center yourself and bring your awareness to the present moment.

Focus on the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your body. Pay attention to the rise and fall of your abdomen or the feeling of air passing through your nostrils. Whenever your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to the breath, without judgment or frustration.

Be sure that your primary focus remains on the road, but periodically return to the breath and mindfulness. A red light is a great opportunity to check in safely.

Using Metta

Metta is a term for the practice of cultivating a loving kindness, sometimes called goodwill. This is a great tool if you struggle with road rage or anger in the car. By recognizing this feeling, you have an opportunity to use metta to become more mindful.

You can come up with a phrase that is helpful for you. Something like “may you be at ease today,” or “everyone is going through something you don’t know about.” Repeat this to yourself in times of frustration, or even when you see others on the road around you. This can help to cultivate our intentions and care for other human beings, which then extends to ourselves.
