There are some family dynamics with the perfect in-laws, but some are less than ideal. It can be tricky to deal with your partner’s family, especially if you don’t like them. Luckily, there are some tips to make the process easier for you.
How to Deal With Your Partner’s Family
1. Be Open With Your Partner
First, it’s vital to be open with your partner. They’ll never know you’re struggling with the in-laws until you let him or her know. From there, you can move forward as a team and decide what to do next.
While it might be helpful to hide certain feelings when talking to your partner, it isn’t helpful to keep the situation secret. It might cause resentment to grow.
2. Create Boundaries
If necessary, form healthy boundaries between you and the in-laws. That might mean avoiding talking about certain subjects, limiting the time they spend at your home, and more. Whatever boundaries are necessary and reasonable to keep between you and the family should be gently enforced to keep things alive.
3. Be Loving
It can feel impossible to be the bigger man or woman, especially if you’ve been tormented by your in-laws. Whenever possible, try to be kind and considerate to them. Unpack the groceries, ask them about their days, and listen when they talk. The phrase “kill them with kindness” is a good rule of thumb with the in-laws.
4. Listen Carefully
Ensure you listen to each word they say carefully, checking nothing is misconstrued or dissected on its way from your ear to your brain. Try to see their side of the story in all situations, determining what to do next from there.
5. Respect Family
Finally, ensure you remember these individuals are the family of your spouse. No matter how you feel about them, they are near and dear to your loved one. Try not to fill them with complaining or gossip about family members they love. It will create relationship tension in no time.
