The Dark Side of the Keto Diet

The keto diet has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to promotion from significant celebrities and nutritionists. While some have benefitted from the eating style, there are dark sides to keto that others should consider before trying it.

What is the Keto Diet?

The goal of the keto diet is to limit the carbs in the diet. It also adds more fat to the diet, putting the body in a state of ketosis, which is where the diet gets its name.

When the body goes into ketosis, it becomes much better at burning fat and using it for energy. Fat in the liver can become ketones, which energize the brain. However, there are some unfortunate side effects to the keto diet.

Dangers of the Keto Diet

There are some side effects to the keto diet, like sleep troubles and increased hunger. However, those aren’t the biggest problems. There are also dangerous health troubles if someone remains on a keto diet for too long.

Here are some of the significant dangers of the keto diet:

  • Extra liver fat: Too much fat in the liver can damage the liver.
  • Low blood protein: Low protein in the blood can lead to ample issues, including worsened metabolism.
  • Kidney stones: Kidney stones are vastly painful and can lower the quality of life.
  • Micronutrient deficiencies: Nutrient deficiencies can cause everything from hair loss to an irregular heartbeat.

Who Should Try the Keto Diet?

Since the keto diet can be dangerous, it isn’t a lifestyle that’s fit for everyone. There is not yet enough information to determine if it’s an effective long-term eating habit, so most should only try it for a short period.

Those who are obese or struggle with type 2 diabetes will benefit most from the keto diet. However, take it slow and speak to a professional before making this diet part of your life.
