Modern Sexual Orientations: How to Discuss with Your Partner

Today’s environment presents more than just traditional sexual orientations. Whether you want to have a conversation with your partner about modern orientations or are feeling a certain way yourself, it’s ideal to approach with caution. There are a few tactics you can use to effectively chat about modern sexuality with your partner.

How To Speak About Modern Sexual Orientations

1. Form an Emotional Safety Space

First, ensure you create a space that is free from emotional negativity. Both of you should be allowed to say what you want, knowing the other person will listen and acknowledge what the other has to say.

The more comfortable the atmosphere, the easier it will be to become vulnerable with each other about a topic like modern sexual orientation. Never start without a safe emotional space – it can only go sideways.

2. Approach the Topic Slowly

Next, ensure you approach the topic slowly and wisely. Understand your partner’s knowledge on the subject and how they feel about it before jumping in head first. The way you talk about it with one person might not be the way you would speak about it with another.

Try testing the water first, asking questions here and there. If all goes well, you can see if your partner is ready to jump further into a conversation about modern sexual orientations.

3. Consider How It Impacts You

Next, consider how this conversation about modern sexual orientations impacts you. Is it something you want to explore with your partner? Are you considering your sexual orientation? Are they?

It’s always a good idea to know what you want to get out of a conversation before starting it. This is especially true with a topic that might impact your relationship with your partner.

4. Determine Steps Moving Forward

Finally, if one of you is questioning your sexual orientation or there is another topic that influences your interactions, it’s time to discuss the steps moving forward. Again, this should happen in an emotionally safe space, and with serious wisdom and patience.
