Inside jokes are fun secrets you have with another person, a joking nod to something only they understand. However, there are some downsides to having an inside joke in your relationship. Are they a good idea to implement, or are you better off keeping them out?

How Can Inside Jokes Help a Relationship?

There are ample ways inside jokes can assist in a relationship. From drawing you closer together to easing some tension in some of the worst moments, inside jokes have the power to do so much.

Inside jokes will help in the following ways:

  • Lightening the moment: A well-timed inside joke will lighten the mood in a tense moment. Of course, it must be spoken with careful thought.
  • Connecting partners: An inside joke will bring two partners closer together. It reminds you of what you’ve connected over and makes you feel like one.
  • Offers reminders: In the worst moments, an inside joke draws you back to square one.

Inside jokes do have some power.

How Can Inside Jokes Hurt a Relationship?

Unfortunately, there are also ways inside jokes can hinder a relationship. If you aren’t careful with your words, you can dig yourself into a hole.

Some of the worst aspects of inside jokes on a relationship include the following:

  • Exclusion of others: Inside jokes keep others out. If you crack one with someone else in the room, they could feel excluded and potentially create drama.
  • Humor in the wrong moment: Not every argument is time for an inside joke. It could escalate the argument.
  • Salt in the wound: Sometimes, an ill-timed inside joke will rub salt in the wound of a bad argument.

It isn’t always a good idea to include an inside joke.

Are Inside Jokes Worth It In a Relationship?

Inside jokes can have an excellent impact on a couple in a relationship, so ultimately, it’s up to your discretion to determine if it’s the right choice to have an inside joke between you and your partner. Do you want to feel closer together? Do it. Do you want to avoid laughing at the wrong moment? Keep them away.
