How Common is Sexual Dysfunction in Women?
Although many don’t realize it, sexual dysfunction is more common in women than men. One study reveals that 43% of women experience dysfunction, while around 31% of men report the same things. Very few women talk about their sexual dysfunction, which has led to the assumption it isn’t frequent.
Symptoms of Sexual Dysfunction in Women
It’s usually apparent if sexual dysfunction is a problem in a woman. There are several symptoms to look out for.
Symptoms of sexual dysfunction include the following:
- Sexual arousal disorder: Women might have trouble getting to an aroused state even with desire.
- Low desire: There is a lack of feelings for sex and little to no sexual desire.
- Orgasmic disorder: It’s nearly impossible for a woman to encounter an orgasm in sex.
- Sexual pain disorder: Sex in stimulation or vaginal contact could be painful.
Causes of Sexual Dysfunction in Women
Many are concerned about what causes sexual dysfunction. There are three main categories.

- Social/Psychological: Issues with your partner, anxiety, or depression could lead to sexual dysfunction.
- Hormonal: Low estrogen levels can create pain in sex and form less of a desire. Also, childbirth can make sex trickier to access.
- Physical: Medical conditions and medication can get in the way of a desirable sexual experience.

There are several risk factors for female sexual dysfunction. Some are controllable, while others are not.
