Unfortunately, erectile dysfunction is an issue that plagues many couples. While some factors influence the situations, others can be confusing to deduce. Many factors could be the cause of cases in certain couples, though many will struggle to determine the cause of their issues. 

Common Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Diseases and Conditions

Several diseases and conditions can directly or indirectly contribute to erectile dysfunction. Some are preventable and treatable, while others are unavoidable for many. Many of these are in a person at birth while others are developed over the course of a lifespan.

Here are a few that can lead to erectile dysfunction:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Vascular disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Penile fracture
  • Radiation therapy
  • Low testosterone
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Atherosclerosis 
  • Pelvic surgery
  • Stroke
  • Injury to the pelvis area

Substances

Not all causes of erectile dysfunction are related to medical conditions. For some, the cause of their troubles results from taking certain substances. Again, many of these can be reduced or cut out completely in a person’s life. 

These substances can cause erectile dysfunction: 

  • Marijuana
  • Barbiturates
  • Cocaine
  • Alcohol
  • Opioids
  • Nicotine
  • Amphetamines

Medication

If there are no substances at play, medication could be the root of the issue. Some have an impact on this area of the body in the user.

Medications that cause erectile dysfunction include the following:

  • Sedatives
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Muscle relaxers
  • Diuretics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-anxiety meds
  • Prostate cancer drugs
  • Anti Seizure medications

Emotional/Psychological Conditions 

There are also emotional and psychological states that can lead to erectile dysfunction. Typically, these occur when someone has a particular mental struggle that impacts them in more ways than just the mind. These are often the hardest to overcome for someone struggling with erectile dysfunction.

Physiological and emotional conditions include the following:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Genophobia, or fear of intimacy
