Planning a first date can be nerve-wracking, worrying about how the meeting will go and making a good first impression. But these dates don’t have to be complicated. Use these tips to start off on the right foot with your next match.

Choose the Right Setting

One of the biggest factors in your date’s success will be where it happens. You want somewhere that isn’t too loud to speak, so quiet cafes, casual restaurants, or a walk in the park are great options. Avoid overly loud or crowded places that can make conversation difficult.

Planning an activity can also be a good way to allow for conversation but give you something else to engage in. Depending on your interests, visiting a museum, going to a botanical garden, or classic mini golf can provide natural conversation starters and reduce the pressure of constant dialogue.

Present Yourself Well

First impressions matter, so be sure that you are showing up the way you want the other person to think of you. Being punctual shows respect for your date’s time, and dressing well demonstrates that you value the meeting. Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable, but also fits the setting of your date.

If you’re worried about conversation, prepare a few conversation topics or questions in advance and be sure to listen actively as they talk. When it’s your turn to talk, always be yourself – authenticity will help determine if you get along and want to pursue further dates, and it will feel more comfortable for you to act like yourself instead of trying to change who you are.

You can even focus on presentation after the date – send a timely follow up to let them know you had a good time and whether you’d like to see them again in the future!
