Attachment styles are how humans attach themselves to others, and everyone has a different attachment style. Although it isn’t the only influence on a relationship, how you attach to other people can influence the dynamics of your relationship.
What Are Common Attachment Styles?
As mentioned before, there are multiple types of attachment. It’s helpful to understand what you have and how it might influence relationship dynamics. Of course, don’t blame everything on your attachment style – but, it could help you understand how you or your partner functions as a human being.
Here are the most common attachment styles:
- Secure attachment style: These individuals are comfortable with public displays of affection, are capable of being loyal, and are loving individuals. They are better able to take bad news than other attachment styles. Those with a secure attachment style are far more successful in their endeavors.
- Avoidant attachment style: Avoidant attachment styles don’t do well with intimacy and tend to be very strong-willed individuals. They always have an exit plan, no matter how well their relationship goes.
- Anxious attachment style: An anxious attachment style is always worried and tense about their relationship. They constantly worry the relationship will end, their partner doesn’t love them, and more.
- Anxious-avoidant attachment style: The anxious-avoidant attachment style prefers to keep to themself, doesn’t talk to their partner about feelings, and is completely emotionally unavailable. They’re neutral in their relationships.
How Do Attachment Styles Impact Relationship Dynamics?
Attachment styles are typically formed in how we attach to our parents, and they secure themselves in adulthood.
Secure attachments don’t always mean a perfect relationship, but they do indicate you’re far better equipped to deal with trouble when it comes your way. You’re satisfied and happy with yourself and your partner.
Avoidant attachments might lead to trouble in creating any long-term intimacy with your partner. You’re afraid to settle down and rest in your relationship, which can make communication hard.
In anxious attachment styles, it can become impossible to sustain a healthy relationship. Every moment will feel like it’s the last together.
Finally, anxious-avoidant attachment styles could lead to a lack of care for your partner. If you approach a relationship as a neutral part, it will be impossible to grow together.
