Building Balance in a Relationship: Why Independence is Important

In any relationship, growing together is crucial. However, just as valuable is balance – developing independent lives from each other to remain healthy and happy. Independence is a valuable asset in any healthy couple.

Why Does Independence Matter?

Keeping independence in a relationship is valuable because it allows you to hold to your values without compromising yourself for the other person. You both will maintain your autonomy while committing yourself to a single individual.

Without time apart, many healthy relationships can fall apart because partners stop feeling like themselves. Independence means you can retain your personality and thus love your partner better.

How To Build Balance in a Relationship

1. Make New Friends and Keep the Old

When entering a relationship, don’t abandon your old friendships. They are part of your past life and hold a special connection to a different you. With these friendships, you should also make new ones. Nurture what you have in your relationship and with friendships to retain a healthy support group apart from your partner.

2. Find a Hobby

Either go back to a hobby you once understood or try something new. Make time for whatever it might be – sewing, running, painting, and more. Although life might seem too busy between your relationship and job, making time for a hobby will ensure you can relax with something you enjoy.

3. Take Yourself On Dates

Take yourself out for dinner every once in a while. Try to get to know yourself to support your partner – check out new movies, try new bakeries, and test your sewing skills. Knowing yourself will help you feel more confident and balanced with your partner.

4. Encourage Each Other

Finally, ensure you and your partner encourage each other to have moments of independence. Set aside time to do things separately – then, come back together when you’re both ready. Knowing it’s okay to spend time apart will make a huge difference.
