A ruptured or blocked artery can cause a stroke and when that happens every second counts. If you have cardiovascular issues, you and the people around you must know the warning signs to determine what to do when this happens. Having the knowledge of the symptoms of stroke, your quick action can save a life.

Warning signs of stroke

There are a number of warning signs of stroke in men and these are the following:

  • Unexpected severe headache without a cause.
  • Sudden trouble seeing.
  • Abrupt numbness in the face, leg, arm, and one side of the body.
  • When you suddenly have trouble walking, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
  • Dizziness.
  • Trouble speaking.
  • Confusion or difficulty in understanding speech.

If any of these symptoms showed, call 911  right away even if you are not sure you’re experiencing a stroke.

How to be prepared

In the U.S. alone, 800,000 people suffer from a stroke annually. It can happen anytime and a planned emergency can make a huge difference.

  • Teach your family the FAST test. If you have children, educate them FAST as well and instruct them how to call 911, how to give your address, and how to describe the situation.

F.A.S.T.

F—FACE 

Ask the person to smile and observe if one side of the face droops.

A-ARMS

Ask the person to raise his arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—SPEECH

Say a short sentence and notice if there’s slurred speech.

T—TIME

If you observed any of these signs, immediately contact 911 and take note of the time when the symptoms happened. 

  • Know the warning signs of stroke. Teach your family and the people close to you about the signs as well.
  • Wear a medical bracelet if you have medical conditions that state your allergies and the medication you take.
