Urinary problems such as a weak urinary stream and waking up in the middle of the night to urinate are symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Although it is not a serious health threat, its symptoms may worsen that could affect your quality of life such as an enlarged gland that obstructs the bladder which in turn causes difficulty with completely emptying the bladder.
If this happens, it is better to seek your doctor’s advice for treatment. Blood tests and physical exams will help diagnose the solution for relief.
Some people choose to turn to natural remedies to treat BPH. And there are lifestyle changes you can make to help either of the medication you choose to take and these are:
- Limit fluid intake
Avoid drinking fluids for 1-2 hours before going to bed. This reduces the chance of your frequent bathroom trips at night.
- Don’t hold urination
Urinate when you feel the urge. Holding your bladder does not help your condition and will only worsen it.
- Avoid antihistamines and decongestants
Antihistamines and decongestants may slow your stream and can potentially block your ability to empty your bladder. Ask your doctor if there can be adjustments made and if there are other medications available for you that can cause lesser urinary issues.
- Take time to empty your bladder completely when urinating
Take time to empty your bladder when you go to the bathroom. This will help lessen the need for ensuing trips to the toilet, which ultimately leads to a healthier prostate.
- Try creating a bathroom schedule and following it
Schedule a time for your toilet trips even if you don’t feel the need to go. This way, your body will recognize just when and what time to go.
