The findings of a recent study that investigates how many people in the United States are still sexually active into their senior years may come as a surprise to you. The participants in the study ranged in age from 57 to 85 years old, and the researchers monitored their sexual behavior, attitudes toward intimacy, and sexual habits throughout the study.
Despite the fact that physiology does play a role, most of these Baby Boomers are nevertheless able to lead sexual lives that are fulfilling.
Previous Gaps in Research Deficiencies
The proportion of our population that is above the age of 65 makes up an increasingly significant share of the total population. It is anticipated that by the year 2060, the percentage of Americans who are over the age of 65 will have increased from 15 percent to roughly a quarter of the total population.

Given those staggering figures, there must be a great deal of research and polling done on the subject of sexual activity among those beyond the age of 50, right? Wrong!
Unfortunately, there is very little evidence available regarding the sexual maturation of elderly people in the United States. The scant amount of material that has been made available thus far presents an unclear picture. Studies of this topic that are small and limited have only just begun to scratch the surface.
It is unfortunate that there is not yet a comprehensive, research-based summary or findings regarding how becoming older affects sexual activity, function, intimacy, and relationships in people who are over the age of 50 in the United States.
Baby boomers have been given a voice in a recent study.
A group of researchers recently tackled the issue with an ambitious study exploring the way elderly people in the United States deal with sexuality, libido, intimate relationships, and the challenges of declining health in this arena. This group of researchers recognized the importance of this valuable data and set out to tackle the problem.
They conducted interviews with a representative sample of people over the age of 55 in the United States who came from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Moreover, physical examinations were performed during the in-home visits.
These examinations consisted of blood, vaginal, and saliva samples being taken. Even the body’s motor and sensory functions were put to the test.
The following are some of the parameters that were considered:
Collecting information regarding previous marriages and living arrangements
Notation of the dates and times of any sexual partnerships that have occurred in the preceding five years, with space for up to three partners per partnership.
The term “sexually active” was defined as engaging in sexual activity with at least one partner within the preceding year, regardless of whether orgasm or intercourse was involved.
Any participant who was currently married or living with a partner was considered to have a “spousal or other intimate relationship,” according to the definition.
We were able to acquire information regarding the frequency with which the respondents admitted to engage in masturbation.
It was determined the frequency of any oral sex as well as vaginal intercourse activity that took place.
For respondents who had not participated in any sexual activity for at least three months, we asked for their feedback on the reasons why, and for respondents who were sexually active, we documented their own self-evaluations of their physical health.
In order to evaluate medical intervention and interaction, patients were questioned on diagnoses of common medical conditions as well as any sexual conversations that may have taken place with a medical professional.
The Outcomes of the Sexual Study
As expected, the individuals’ sexual activity did, in fact, decrease as they got older. No one was surprised by this result. Women were more likely to report having experienced this than men were. Sexual activity was reported at a larger percentage among those respondents who experienced more optimal health compared to those respondents who struggled with medical concerns.
The likelihood of the female participants still being in a committed relationship reduced as their ages climbed. The older the participants were, the less likely it was that they were still dating.
The concluding study found that the majority of senior citizens in the United States still value their close relationships, regardless of whether or not they are married. Perhaps more significantly, the sexual life of those beyond the age of 50 is still highly active. Although sexual activity becomes less frequent, it does not disappear entirely.
These sexually active Baby Boomers are still involved in masturbation, oral sexual activity, and intercourse. As a result, the bottom line is that there is still a great deal to look forward to in terms of your sexual life as you become older.
