Although many still choose to have children, this generation of young adults seems to gravitate more toward keeping kids out of their lives. While many are open to this practice, others still want to have children, making it critical to talk to your partner if you don’t want to have kids.
Is Not Wanting Kids Common?
Although not wanting children is not the majority opinion, it’s becoming more common to avoid kids. Almost a third of adults don’t want kids, and the current birthing rate is at an all-time low in nearly 35 years.
Many people don’t want kids for some of the following reasons:
- They consider having children selfish
- They think they are expensive
- They don’t want to be parents
- They’re scared
There are dozens of reasons for voluntary childlessness.
Again, though it’s common, it’s not everyone’s desire. Your partner must know if you don’t want to have kids – it could be a dealbreaker for them.
Tips for Telling Your Partner You Don’t Want Kids
It can be tricky to tell your partner you don’t want children. It needs to be brought up but should be discussed in the right way.
Tell your partner you don’t want tips in the following ways:
- Be quick to tell: Tell them sooner rather than later that you don’t want children.
- Tell the truth: Be honest about your choice. Don’t lie or cave if they don’t like it.
- Explain: Have a reason why you don’t want children, even if it’s just that you don’t want them. Your partner, especially if they want children, should know why
- Allow time: Give your partner time to think about your choice. It might be easy for them to hear but difficult to process.
What If You Change Your Mind?
It’s always possible to change your mind about children. If you do and are still with your partner, let them know as soon as possible. Just like not wanting kids, desiring children can be a massive decision for both parties.
