Tips For Explaining Non-Heterosexual Relationships to Young Kids

Children are growing up and learning new things, from new types of food to different environments. One thing that might be tricky for young children to understand is non-heterosexual relationships. As a parent, it’s helpful to have some tools in your arsenal to make it easier for them to understand this new dynamic.

How To Help Kids Understand Non-Heterosexual Relationships

1. Simplify Language

When speaking with children about something more complicated they aren’t used to, ensure you use as simple language as possible. The smaller your words, the easier it will be for your child to understand what you are saying to them.

Even with simple language, it can be tricky for semi-complex dynamics to set into a child’s brain. Be patient with them as they use their brains to process what you tell them.

2. Be Calm and Straightforward

If your child initiates a question about a non-heterosexual relationship, it’s easy to panic if you haven’t practiced for this moment. Just like any question about the birds and the bees, you might next explain complex topics before you’re ready.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to remain cool, calm, and collected. Your child is genuinely curious, and they are looking to you for an answer.

3. Explain Before Meeting

If you want to have this conversation because a non-heterosexual couple is coming over, ensure you explain this concept to your child before they arrive. That way, they’ll have a background for what they’re experiencing, and the greeting will be far less likely to end awkwardly.

Also, having your child put a face to what you’re explaining will make more sense to them. They are better able to comprehend what they can see.

4. Encourage Love

Finally, encourage them to show love to any non-heterosexual couple they see, even if they don’t yet understand what’s happening. Again, be patient with your child. It can be tricky for them to understand more complex topics, but with the encouragement of love, you can’t go wrong.
